In the previously published article we saw half of the opponents in the fight to snatch the laurel wreath from the iPhone, leaving the other half for a later delivery, well, the time has come for you to meet the others runners of this race towards glory (and among them my favorite athlete, omnia).
In the third starting position, what for me is the best model awaits us, the Samsung Omnia, also Samsung’s first attempt to catch up with the almost untouchable iPhone. Its strong points are a TouchWiz interface similar to that of the iPhone, also incorporating the “spin effect” despite the lack of an accelerometer. How is this possible? Well, thanks to the ingenuity of the developers, who saw in their 5 megapixel camera the possibility of controlling the position of the phone, saving costs and triggering originality.
In addition to the camera (the highest resolution of the models seen so far with smile detection included) this model is not far behind and also has a 3.2-inch screen, 3G connectivity through HSDPA, wifi b/g, bluetooth 2.0, FM radio, an internal memory of 8GB/16GB depending on the model expandable using microSD cards, integrated GPS, output television, **support for DivX and
Finally, on the fourth route (the outermost street) the LG Viewty will run, a mobile whose characteristics are far from its rivals and focuses on design (we could call it the camera-mobile), having a Prada version on the market for those who see the brand as the best distinctive.
It incorporates a touch screen whose operation is not comparable to the rest (it is much more basic which is transferred to its interface), an impressive 5.1 megapixel camera that records video at 120fps, 3-inch screen, 3G connectivity through HSDPA (but it does not have Wi-Fi), Bluetooth 2.0 and an internal memory of 170MB expandable through microSD.
The race begins but in the world of mobile phones it is the market that decides who gets on the podium and, although the 4 models are worthy competitors to a greater or lesser extent, the truth is that they have a very difficult time taking the gold medal from the iPhone.
As a last note, in Spain mobile companies have focused on some of these devices to cope with telephone calls and they can be found in contract portability for a quite interesting price (from €29 for the Viewty in Vodafone or Orange to €200 for the HTC Diamond**, also in Vodafone). It seems that they have not yet set their sights on omnia, as it is coming onto the market these days for an approximate price of €550 and free, it will be a matter of time before it appears in the telephone companies’ catalogue, but…will it manage to unseat the leader?
