Historically, the game could be said to vomit directly on the foundations and spirit of the saga, focusing on following a path begun in the aforementioned Resident Evil 4 and although it cannot be denied that the game was entertaining and I enjoyed playing it a lot, it did not even come close to what the faithful followers and fans expected for a title in this franchise, and with this fifth installment the same thing has happened again. An even more arcade game, with the camera placed over the shoulder, very much in the style of Gears of War and other action games, with a laser pointer that will mark the destination of our bullets and a cooperative mode, which although it is fun if you can play it with a colleague over the Internet, means that if you decide to play it you only have to carry the burden of your partner’s AI which does not help you almost on any occasion, especially in the final bosses, and that sometimes borders on masochism, with the consequent restart of the adventure at the last save point of the story.

As a positive detail, we must recognize the great work of the Capcom engine in terms of graphics, possibly the most impressive that we can find for new generation consoles, impressive explosions, particles, detail of some enemies and above all the management of dynamic lights, but as they say, not all that glitters is gold, and this graphics engine has a major defect that for me ruins everything said so far in terms of graphic virtuosity**, and that is that, as had already happened with Previous Capcom games, such as Dead Rising or Lost Planet, the graphics engine used does not cope well with rescaling to 1080p resolutions.
I felt like crying when I played the game at home on my 40-inch Sony FullHD and watched in disbelief as the tearing is present throughout cinematics and any quick movements you make during the game. The solution? Waiting for Capcom to release a patch, which I think will be unlike anything seen in all of their previous games, means sacrificing a little quality in the game to be able to play it without such an annoying bug by lowering the resolution to 720p, so I have to say that the bug is corrected and is almost imperceptible throughout the entire game.
Continuing with the list of notable things about the game, we must recognize the company’s efforts to bring out a multitude of details and references to the old Resident Evil, and without revealing anything, I anticipate that it puts an end to the story of the saga by weaving together almost all the details of the previous installments, and that everything suggests, as Capcom recently commented, that they are thinking about Resident Evil 6 being a reboot of the franchise, which will have little or nothing relationship with this first saga. Furthermore, the game does not have a single moment for rest, with very epic moments and a story, which, although predictable at times, does not disappoint and calmly takes you about 12 hours of gameplay to complete, which I know, is not wonderful, but it remains within the average time of games of this generation.

If we have already seen the highlights of the game, and with its nuances, now comes the bad part, which undoubtedly has a headline, control. It is totally unacceptable that a game of this graphic quality, with such a strong sense of action, is based on an archaic control system based on what was implemented in a 32-bit machine a whopping 13 years ago. As if it were an Atari 2600 tank game, you will not be able to move if you are aiming at the enemies to shoot them, so many times we will try to position ourselves as far away as possible and start spinning around like crazy on ourselves to keep the groups of infected that attack us at bay. They say it’s to give more tension and feel a sense of helplessness, but I simply see pure and simple laziness and little desire to really change the rules of the game… and since we changed the style, the graphics and the entire essence, what did it cost to update this detail?
In short, a correct ending to one of the most legendary sagas in the world of video games, which will be unconditionally liked by those who also enjoyed Resident Evil 4, but which will leave a bitter taste for the most purists. Let’s hope that this announced reboot of the saga in the sixth installment can combine the best of each of the installments, combining plot terror and good graphics in equal parts. And the gamer does not live on graphics alone…
