Zombie Island (David Wellington) es un libro de zombis un tanto atípico y cuando lo compré tras leer su sinopsis he de reconocer que me esperaba otra cosa, quizás debido a tener demasiada imaginación o a haber visto recientemente dos películas de humor con los zombis como telón de fondo como son Zombis Party o Bienvenidos a Zombieland. Pero claro, te dicen que la historia trata de un representante de la ONU que va acompañado de un grupo de colegialas soldado y bueno, ¿qué se puede esperar?. Pero no, Zombie Island no es un libro de humor y las colegialas soldado de la sinopsis son en realidad niñas soldado somalíes.
The book tells the story of Delkab, a UN representative who must go to New York accompanied by a group of girl soldiers to look for medicines to alleviate the illness of the leader of Somalia, which has become the world’s only bastion against the zombie threat. Also entering the scene is Gary, a New York medical student turned zombie who has managed to retain human consciousness even though he is undead.
It is precisely Gary’s part that provides greater freshness to the story, which is otherwise quite typical. A story that starts off quite badly (why are we going to fool ourselves) with some very confusing flashbacks and a somewhat insubstantial narration style, but little by little it improves in intensity and ends up engaging.
In conclusion, Zombi Island is a book that all lovers of the zombie genre will like, but above all, those lovers of the genre who have visited New York will like it.
