Analysis Broken Sword 2 The Forces of Evil

Broken Sword The Smoking Mirror Otro juego mås de mi infancia llega a las estanterías en formato remasterizado, y la verdad, es un lujo poder revivir las aventuras gråficas de cuando era un niño con un lavado de cara.

In this case it is Broken Sword The Forces of Evil (Broken Sword The Smoking Mirror in English, I don’t understand those who translate the names of things), the sequel to the acclaimed graphic adventure Broken Sword The Legend of the Templars.

The game is available for iPod/iPhone and iPad as a universal application, that is, if you pay once you will have the game available for all three platforms, not like Broken Sword 1, which in the case of the iPad, being an HD version, is separate. The price in the App Store is €5.

The story of the game takes us a few months after the end of the first adventure, with George who returns to Paris, after having left Nico alone to go take care of his sick father. Although as always ** things will not take long to go wrong, Nico will end up kidnapped ** and George locked in a burning house, and from that moment our game will begin.

In this game we will travel around the globe: passing through Paris, through London, through the Caribbean and through a fictional city in Central America, Quaramonte. I especially love the latter, with a very successful setting using background noise to simulate a market, and traditional music from the area.

In case you missed it a few weeks ago we already analyzed the reissue of the first Broken Sword. You can see it by clicking here. In this case the game does not have any added story, but simply adds the improvements inserted in the reissue of Broken Sword 1 to Broken Sword 2. It also gives a small facelift to the graphics and improves the quality of the music.

Of course, these improvements include: the clues that will help us at certain moments in the story, going from slight to completely resolving the situation, a diary in which we will be told everything that is happening and the vignettes with the characters’ faces when they speak or interact (they even gesture when speaking), drawn by Dave Gibbons (co-creator of Watchmen).

A new addition is the synchronization of games through Dropbox, (If you don’t know Dropbox yet, click here) to continue the story where you left off on another device. For example, you can play for 1 hour on the iPhone, save your game to Dropbox, turn on the iPad and continue from there. This synchronization is a perfect addition to the universal application. Another great addition are the Game Center achievements that will reward us for advancing in the story, doing things well, or even doing them wrong.

For my taste, Broken Sword 2 is a much more complete adventure than the first one, learning from its mistakes and adding a little more difficulty in some puzzles. Although yes, it is also much shorter. The game can be finished in about 4 hours if you know the game or abuse the clues it gives you a lot.

The only problem is that the proximity of certain objects makes it very difficult to get your finger right to touch them, and on some occasions we will repeat a bad click with our finger several times until we get it right. It’s a shame that they didn’t establish a minimum distance between points, as it would make things a lot easier.

Note

  • Presentation: The game tells us the story of George upon his return to Paris. It is a much more entertaining story for my taste than that of Broken Sword 1. 8
  • Graphics: Although they are not perfect, the truth is that the graphics are well taken care of, the vignettes add a lot of quality to the narrative and are very successful. 7
  • Duration and Engagement: The game lasted me approximately 4 hours although I remembered almost all the situations perfectly. Maybe it is a bit expensive for its duration. 7
  • Final Note: In general a good conversion that will delight all fans of the saga, perhaps some extra history is missing, to surprise old players, such as Nico’s alternative history in the previous one. 7.5
