It is one of those sagas in which its sales are not in line with the critics, since if you do not like the style of play you may end up hating it, and that is the case of some analysts. But the saga remains strong, breaking all sales records in Japan upon its release and being Koei’s most successful saga.

The game will be available from the 15th of this month for PS3 and Xbox 360, for a price of €61.95.

But is this Dynasty Warriors worth it if you already have others? The answer is: it depends on if you like the genre.

Dynasty Warriors is based on a Chinese novel written in the 14th century (Romance of the Three Kingdoms), which recounts the final years of the Han dynasty and the beginning of the era of the 3 kingdoms (From the year 169 to the year 280). In the game they tell us the era of the 3 kingdoms in its entirety, although of course with certain literary licenses.

The game contains two main modes, Story and Conquest. The first of these modes is precisely the one that this story tells us, being able to play with each of the three kingdoms** Wu, Shu and Wei. Additionally, this installment includes a fourth story, Jin’s, which we are recommended to play when we have finished the other 3 stories.

In each story we will experience the same events, but seen from different points of view, being able to play with the bosses and generals of each kingdom. This is one of the new additions to the saga, and it is greatly appreciated since it takes away the role of the boss of the kingdom to give us a greater variety of playable characters.

The game is simple, we will start the mission normally at a safe point where we can buy weapons or talk to other NPCs, and as soon as we start the mission, hordes of enemies will attack our character who will have to kill them as best he can. To do this we will have two weapons that we can choose from among many possible ones, although each character will normally prefer a specific weapon with which they can execute more devastating attacks.

The attack is reduced to 3 buttons: square for normal attack, triangle for brutal attack and circle for Musou attack, which is the character’s super attack with which we will normally kill all the enemies on screen. This attack is different for each character and we can even unlock a second Musou attack when we advance in the story. Throughout these missions we will encounter officers and generals from the other kingdoms that we will have to fight against, normally these enemies are much tougher, and will require much more attention than the typical 2-3 sword blows with which we usually finish off the common soldiers.

The conquest mode will allow us to advance on the map through shorter battles conquering all the regions, being able to select the general of the kingdom we want to make him leader. With this we will unlock weapons, special battles and even characters that we can later use in the story mode. This mode is very complete and quite long, as well as replayable since we can repeat battles with new objectives to beat. In the conquest mode there is also the multiplayer mode in which we can join other players to carry out the missions, we will have to wait for the release of the game to see if this mode catches on among the community.

Dynasty Warriors is a very complete game, with about 4-5 hours in normal mode per kingdom making a total of almost 20 hours, that’s not counting the conquest mode (which is quite dense), nor all the unlockables that the game includes (galleries, stamps, weapons, videos, etc
). Of course, if you are not a fan of hack & slash games the game will become repetitive so it is not recommended for everyone.

Dynasty Warriors 7

The sound section is done with some good songs, although since the story is so long some songs end up repeating themselves too much. The lip synchronization of the characters in English is not very successful. The graphics are another improvement of this installment, putting it at a level well above PS2, which was where the saga had gotten stuck. The EX and Musou attacks are very spectacular, and sometimes the number of enemies on the screen is quite large, however it does not reach the graphic level expected on a console like PS3.

Note

  • Presentation: Its story is very careful and the ins and outs of the novel are extremely complex, the story is engaging. 8
  • Graphics: The graphics are fair, the animations are good and the magic is attractive, it is an improvement over old Dynasty Warriors but it is very far from the level seen in other games. 7
  • Duration and Engagement: The story mode lasts about 20 hours, and the conquest mode can entertain us for many extra hours. It can become somewhat repetitive if you don’t like the genre. 8.5
  • Final Note: Dynasty Warriors 7 will delight all fans of the saga, a very complete game, with a very well-told story, better than usual graphics and an enormous duration. Of course, if you dislike the genre, it is not a game for you. 7.5
