Two Worlds II

It took the guys at Reality Pump 3 years to release the second part of Two Worlds, a game that, although critically acclaimed in its day, was far from perfect.

The game is available for Xbox 360 and PS3 for a price of €66.95 and for PC for a price of €46.95.

Will the world of Antaloor be saved by criticism?

Two Worlds II

This second part takes us 5 years after the first installment, which although it was not a bad game, suffered from many problems in its playability, and an outdated technical section. This is not the case with this second installment, which although it still has some problems from its first part, has improved many aspects of the game, trying to position itself among the most important Western role-playing sagas.

If you didn’t have the chance to try the first part, don’t worry, since as soon as it begins, everything that happened in the previous installment is shown to us in a kind of summary. With this introduction in which they explain to us that the evil Gandohar has our protagonist and his sister imprisoned. With this, we will be perfectly positioned to be able to enjoy the second part of this great title. Two Worlds inherits its inspiration from novels similar to the Lord of the Rings, so we will often feel close to these works. Even so, the game’s story is completely original, and it presents us with a fairly solid script at first.

In order not to spoil the story, I will simply say that our protagonist will be rescued from the clutches of Gandohar at the beginning of the game by a group of Orcs and from that moment, which will serve as a tutorial, we will be told the main story of the game. Basically an oracle teaches us the dark future that awaits us if we do not confront Gandohar and, as in almost all stories, our hero will try to defeat him and save his sister from his clutches.

Two Worlds II

Before starting, we can customize our hero (although in a very limited way) with different hairstyles, faces and features. From that moment on, except in the cinematic scenes (which by the way are abundant), the only thing we will see will be the back of our character, since the camera is positioned in third person. Like other titles like Oblivion or Fallout, this view is far from perfect when executing some actions and very robotic movements are seen, although it has clearly improved a lot compared to the previous version.

The game’s mapping is quite large, being almost on par with other games like Oblivion, although it is true that many areas are limited as they are islands. On some occasions we will also have some areas of the game closed, for plot reasons, so we will have to wait until later to be able to access them. Perhaps it is somewhat misleading that the largest island is not 100% visitable so it gives the player the feeling of unfinished.

Another positive point is the few bugs that one encounters while playing, normally games of this size are usually accompanied by various bugs, due to the difficulty of testing all possible aspects in a reasonable time. In my adventure I have not suffered from almost any bugs and it is something really positive in such a long adventure. Although as a complaint, I will say that in the cinematics it is really a distraction that the characters do not stop moving, looking at different places. I don’t really understand its function, since all it does is distract the player.

Two Worlds II

The main problem I have suffered with the game is that combat is its weakest point. You have 3 main options, magic, melee and archer; Melee is a pointless button masher in which the fun becomes null as the enemies are never up to your capabilities. In the case of the archer, the stealth option is null, because they always know where you are even if you hide, plus the targeted car makes things too easy. As for magic, it is quite difficult to be able to defeat enemies using magic alone unless you use all your skill points in said discipline.

Boring combat only intensifies the player’s feeling of repetitiveness and boredom, so a game that starts out very entertaining becomes boring as the hours go by, becoming tiring at times. The secondary missions are not related to the main story at all, and are generally quite useless. The duration is a very important point, since the game can last from about 20 hours, if you go quite fast, to more than 50 if you pay attention to all the details. For my taste, the boring gameplay does not help at all to invest 50 hours in this game.

The main story is entertaining and graphically the game is good. The outdoor lighting is more than correct and the final result is very successful, achieving really pleasant settings. In the sound section, the game simply complies, one could even say that it falls somewhat short. The Spanish translation remains at a fairly high level, since it starts out quite well and gets worse throughout the game as if they were getting tired of translating it.

Two Worlds II

Note

  • Presentation: The story is quite good, and the beginning of the game places us perfectly after what happened in the first part. It’s a shame that the story loses some steam throughout the game. 7.5
  • Graphics: The graphics are good. Especially outdoors is where you can most appreciate the effects of good lighting and the beauty of the landscapes. Although the game suffers from some stutters in the PS3 version. 7.75
  • Duration and Engagement: The game lasts about 20 hours if you play very quickly, although it can easily be extended to about 40-50 hours if you like to enjoy the game. The fact that the combat gameplay is a disaster does not help at all to get hooked on the game, and ends up becoming monotonous. 6.75
  • Final Note: Although it improves in almost everything from the first part of the game, it fails to improve one of the most important parts of any game, the combat. As the combat becomes repetitive and boring, it turns a good game into a game that ends up tiring and it is a real shame since it was a good attempt. If you are fans of the RPG genre, you will probably like the game, although there are better options on the market. 7.5
