The Fotolog phenomenon (I)

/ bocabit / internet

That I write Fotolog with a capital “f” is not a mere coincidence, obviously, I am referring to the page that is called that, since it seems that it is the only alternative that exists today to have a fotolog, but it is not. Fotolog offers a VERY limited service. To begin with, something that I particularly dislike is the design, worthy of a website from 1997 (despite using CSS), in which Google ads are interspersed everywhere, deformations in the side thumbnails if they do not meet the standard measurements of a photo, quite difficult navigation in which if you are not used to browsing you confuse the author’s photos with those of his friends, etc. etc. And I wonder: Weren’t we already in the era of Web 2.0? Why is the only existing AJAX on the account creation form?

Since I couldn’t talk about something without knowing it beforehand, I created an account and the truth is that it is more limited than I thought.

  • You can only upload one photo per day.
  • No more than 200 comments per photo are allowed.
  • Does not accept animated gif images.
  • You cannot edit the description of a photo once it has been created: you have to delete it and upload it again (Doing this will delete all comments on that photo).
  • Larger than 2MB.N are not accepted
  • or you can enter html code neither in comments nor in descriptions.
  • The only modifications we can make to the appearance of the photolog are to change the color of the text, background, links and title. Thanks to this, there are designs like this one, which uses blue on red (Long live usability!). Why don’t you include more templates?

Perhaps its (only) goodness is that it is very easy to use for all those people who have never touched a computer in their life and who do not know the concepts of “upload” and “download”.

Obviously, we can always become Gold members to suffer fewer shortages, but of course, paying $45 a year (for that price you can buy two or three great servers with a .com domain and everything).

In short, and to make it clear, I hate Fotolog! There are much better alternatives for the eyes, such as the pack (Wordpress.com or Blogger)+Imageshack.us (You upload a photo to imageshack and link it from the blog, without complications). If you have read this far, I hope you are discouraged from creating an account on Fotolog, unfortunately, others have already done so
