This impressive image was taken from the Mir space station on August 11, 1999, two years before it plunged into the Earth in a controlled manner. We are used to seeing solar eclipses continuously, but this is surely the most spectacular of all, since it is the shadow of the Moon on the Earth. This shadow moved at a speed of 2000km per hour, and in the center of it would be where there would be a total solar eclipse, while in other parts a partial eclipse would be seen.
Additionally, the points seen in the upper left corner of the image could possibly be Jupiter and Saturn. Awesome.
