Current view of the console market: Sony

PS3 and PSPContinuing with my previous article about my current vision of the console market Nintendo, it is Sony’s turn with its PS3 and its PSP.

Let’s be frank, I didn’t like PS3 since it was announced with its famous “banana controller”, it seemed horrible and tremendously “anti-ergonomic” to me. Furthermore, the design of the console seemed totally incorrect to me in terms of what users are looking for today, since they generally put things on the console, as if it were a video or a DVD, something that is impossible due to the curved surface of the console.

When Sony announced its famous “SixAxis” controller, my disappointment was even greater, since it was clear that they had made the design change (or return to the origins) so quickly and hastily that they left the vibration by the wayside, supposedly because it was an “outdated playable experience”, something that has been denied after rumors that soon the consoles sold will have a SixAxis with vibration.

The price of the console is something that attracts a lot of attention, and possibly the main reason that puts off all potential buyers, but is it really that expensive? It has Blu-Ray, a 60GB hard drive and I don’t know how many other things, something that none of its competitors have. The problem is that they do not give the buyer the option to choose what they want, they impose it on you, no matter what. What I do see as a success now is the inclusion of Blu-Ray instead of DVD, since according to what they say, they are falling short and soon games in this format will have to make use of the hard drive.

Will the PS3 be successful? I would say yes
if it dropped in price, something that its competitors are doing (X360) or don’t need to do (Wii) because they have a price that is already VERY competitive. And the games? Well
at the moment it only has Final Fantasy XIII and Metal Gear 4 as exclusives (Although we will see for how long).

The PSP, on the other hand, is a console that I like due to its possibilities and technical capabilities. Much more could be used than it is, but practically the only thing they do for it are modified versions of PS2 games. It is evident that it does not have enough capacity to compete with the Nintendo DS, but it is still an interesting option.
