Each person is different, and even more so when we refer to behavior. Some like sado, others like their girlfriends to dress like schoolgirls while they spank their asses, and others are simply content with having their feeds well organized in Google Reader.
Taking this as a premise, it is clear that not all of us like the same thing or do it in the same way, and that also includes the way we read and treat blogs. Dandel took the trouble to do a mega-survey on his blog, from which good conclusions can be drawn from the results.
First of all, the usefulness of the categories is more clouded than the glass of the Titanic car, since most people do not use them to navigate the blog and prefer to use the search engine of the blog to find what they are looking for.
Lately we have been seeing many blogs with huge images or “flashes” at the top of the blog, announcing reports, interviews, or featured entries… a bad habit. The blog is not a showcase and people do not like to be told what to read no matter how much it took you to write it or no matter how much you want to boost your personal ego, or at least that is the conclusion drawn after reading the results of the survey.
If we take the previous point into account, it is logical that people do not like to be oversaturated with information and find a zillion entries that force them to scroll infinitely to reach the end of the blog. Furthermore, if an entry is too long, the best thing to do is to cut it with the well-known “more” tag, and let whoever wants to continue reading it.
Finally, something that was expected is that most people use RSS to keep up to date with blog updates, but, instead, they prefer to follow the comments by entering the blog from time to time to see the new ones.
