Dyson Air Multiplier, a bladeless fan

/ bocabit / informatica

You probably know the Dyson brand for its vacuum cleaners; it is easy to distinguish them from other models due to their striking colors and aggressive designs. But, of course, it’s not about vacuum cleaners that I’m going to talk to you about, but rather about Dyson’s latest invention, bladeless fans.

It is called Dyson Air Multiplier, and it is available in two models: AM 01, the typical small desktop fan; and AM 02, which is the tower model. In this analysis I am going to talk about the AM 01 model, although most opinions coincide with those of the AM 02 model, as both work exactly the same.

The AM 01 comes separated into two parts, the main part that serves as a base and at the same time as a turbine to accelerate the air, and the upper circular part that, through small openings, distributes the air gently.

The operation, although transparent to us, is simple. The air enters through the bottom of the fan (you can see a grille in the photos), its speed is multiplied in the motor, similar to a turbine, and is ejected through the upper circle. In this way, the air surrounding the fan and the one behind it is dragged by the fan’s air flow, achieving an amplification of the air taken in (approximately 15 times more).

From the first moment you can see that it is a very careful product. Details such as the plug with a grip to remove it show that nothing has been left to chance. Of course, as we are dealing with a high-end product, with a quite high price (€299), we cannot ask for less, although it is clear that Dyson has dazzled us with a really attractive design. The assembly process is very simple and in less than 1 minute we can start testing the fan.

The first impression of the fan’s operation is very good. Good airflow with the fan on the lowest speed, although we soon started playing with the controls. The design is minimalist, with only 3 front elements to take into account. A power button, a potentiometer (the wheel in the middle that can be turned to vary the intensity) and a button that activates the movement of the fan, which moves about 90Âș automatically.

The potentiometer works really well and allows us to adjust the airflow to an amount that we feel comfortable with, we don’t have to depend on the typical 2 or 3 power settings of conventional fans. In addition, since it is a continuous air flow, we avoid the typical gusts that fans with blades usually produce.

Regarding the power, I can assure you that in the maximum speed position the air flow is really strong and normally less speed will be enough for us to be comfortable, although it is appreciated when it is a really muggy day.

The size of the fan is just right, and it will be an ideal companion on a desk near a desktop computer, or placed on a small table to ventilate a room. The power cable is quite long so you won’t have any major problems connecting it.

Another important point is the tilt of the fan. This is done by lightly touching it with a finger, as the gravity point of the fan is really low. And it stays fixed without any problem, so we can tilt the air flow to the height we want without any problem.

An aspect that is not normally analyzed is the ease of cleaning, with a simple wipe over the upper circle, the fan will be shiny, unlike fans with blades, which over time look truly disgusting. And of course its bladeless design allows it to be a totally safe element for those of you who have children at home.

Finally, I have to say that the Dyson AM 01 has surprised me, it is a really good fan, with a design that will surprise all your guests, and it looks really good on a table with a computer as a new technological gadget. I don’t know if my freak streak can’t control me, but Dyson has made me fall in love with it.

Balance

In favor

  • Good quality.
  • Excellent air distribution.
  • Careful design down to the last detail.
  • Really easy to assemble and use
  • Easy to clean
  • Safe for children.

Against

  • It is very expensive, although I understand that it is a new and probably expensive technology.
  • It should include some type of marking for reassembly instead of a sticker.

PS: As an image is worth a thousand words, I have tried to take as many photos as possible so that you can see the product, although I assure you that it is not an easy task, especially with the DSLR under repair. So sorry if the quality of the photos is a little lower than normal, it’s because of my old digital camera.
