Yesterday the second VAT increase for the second consecutive year materialized. Much has been said about the subject and it is very evident that in one way or another it is going to affect consumption. As soon as you read comments from âexpertsâ who say that it will be of no use, and from others who say that it will help to increase revenue. I am not an expert in economics, what I do know is that I will control my expenses more and that yesterday the shopping center I went to was practically empty despite it being Saturday, although it is summer and that could also be a reason.
I think there is a feeling of general discontent, due to two factors. On the one hand, the PP campaign against the VAT increase, in which they even gathered signatures and left statements for posterity in which they said that a tax increase was the consequence of having bad rulers. A real firecracker in the face.
On the other hand, the feeling of frustration of knowing for sure that this tax increase will only serve to continue wasting public money on meaningless public companies, on airports without airplanes and on so many other things that I donât need to list because they are well known to everyone.
I hope Iâm wrong and this increase does serve some purpose, but I have the impression that many cuts are being made and few reforms. Perhaps what we need, after all, is the intervention of the European Union to give our politicians a wake-up call.
