I am Legend

Nueva York desolado

It seems that lately I have become quite fond of Will Smith’s movies, and he is an actor that I have loved since ā€˜The Prince of Belair’. So much so that on Friday I went to see ā€˜Soy Leyenda’, the actor’s last film after ā€˜In Search of Happiness’.

I Am Legend tells the story of Robert Neville (Will Smith), one of the best scientists in the world and a general in the army of the United States of America. It is the year 2012 and he is the only survivor in New York after the spread of a terrible virus that was supposedly going to be the cure for cancer, but that has turned 90% of the world’s population into a species of animals sensitive to ultraviolet light that only satisfy their most primal instincts (Read zombies-vampires), while the remaining 10% have been killed by the aforementioned zombies.

The film takes place entirely in a devastated and magnificently set New York in the year 2012. The animals roam freely through the city and the vegetation has partially covered some of the streets, where the enormous buildings of the Big Apple rise, in one of which Neville lives. You really don’t think you’re seeing a set, because the immensity of the city is very accomplished.

ā€œMy name is Robert Neville. I’m a survivor living in New York. If there’s anyone out there… anyone, know that you’re not aloneā€¦ā€

I’m not going to tell anything about the plot, because along with the setting I think it’s the best part of the film, which, as I read on Carballo’s blog, is based on the book of the same name written in 1954 by Richard Matheson, which took place in the city of Los Angeles. It doesn’t deserve to be gutted since it manages to keep the viewer in suspense in front of the screen, especially in the moments when it gets dark and you know something is going to happen… But when? :D

The main drawback that I would give to the film are the ā€˜shadow seekers’ and dogs generated by the speaker, which are too much of a song and seem more typical of a film from the year 94. They could have done a little more work on them, since they ruin part of the setting of the film. Why not use real actors? MoneyMoney.

On the subject of the infected there are also some things that seemed to me to be distressing to say the least. No matter how much virus produces effects similar to those of rabies that a person has, it does not mean that he or she will gain super powers and can climb the facades of buildings, jump two meters or climb lampposts and knock them over. Spiderman does that, and with difficulty.

Another element that I did not like in the film is ā€˜the boss’ of the infected. What does the mummy do in this movie? Because if you look back at your video library you will discover that he is exactly the same: bald, bad-tempered, and opens his mouth in the same way…

In short, it could be said that I Am Legend has not fully met my expectations. However, it is a good option to have a good time at the movies, since it managed to make me nervous (Especially in the brutal scene in which Neville’s dog (Sam) goes after a gazelle and Neville has to look for him… great). See it, it is recommended, but it has important shortcomings.
