20 years of Blizzard Entertainment

It seems incredible that on a day like today, 20 years ago, three boys fresh out of university decided to start a video game company. This company was called Silicon & Synapse and those guys were: Mike Morhaime (Current CEO of the company), Allen Adham and Frank Pearce. Although surely the vast majority of you will know it by its current name: Blizzard Entertainment.

Since 1994, when the company took its current name, they have been the creators of such well-known sagas as Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo.

It currently has more than 4,000 employees, and is probably one of the video game companies with the highest turnover thanks to the monthly installments of its extremely famous MMORPG, World of Warcraft.

Furthermore, Blizzard is one of the few remaining video game companies that does not overwhelm with continuations of its games annually. They have a very different business model: a game will be ready to sell, when it is, and if this requires 2, 3 or 4 years, then it will require it.

At the beginning of this post you can see the video with the message of gratitude from two of the company’s founders.

And by clicking here, you can see the page they have created to celebrate the anniversary.

I also leave you, below, the transcription of the video into Spanish, in case your English is somewhat difficult :P

Hello everyone. Frank and I want to send a message to our players around the world as today is a very special day for Blizzard Entertainment. The company is turning 20, which is absolutely incredible. When we created the company, back in 1991, there were only three of us. We want to take this opportunity to thank you for all these years of support. Without you we could not continue with what we are doing.

The community that has grown around Blizzard and our games… is something very exciting for us. We greatly appreciate and are overwhelmed by the support we receive from all over the planet. Our games would not be possible without you. It is fascinating to have a community that shares our same passion for games and helps us achieve an even higher level of quality than we would achieve alone.

Your passion for games is evident. We love hearing your opinion, don’t stop doing it. It really motivates us to improve, and we strive hard to meet your expectations with better products in the future.
