Internet Explorer 6 was a leading browser in its time, but its time was more than 10 years ago, when web standards were still conspicuous by their absence (or at least they were much greener than they are now). Now, more than a browser, it is considered by many people, including myself, a scourge that must be eradicated because it causes nothing but problems: to users because it is a major security breach and to web developers because creating a page for Internet Explorer 6 means practically working twice as hard in a useless way.
What was the problem? That at the time, Microsoft decided that all those who wanted to install Internet Explorer 7 should have its original operating system, so few dared to take the step. Perhaps that is the main reason why in China, almost 35% of all computers still have IE6 installed: due to the high piracy rate in that country.
IE6 Countdown is a page created by Microsoft that indicates the percentage of users by country that still use Internet Explorer 6, surely an attempt to pressure people to upgrade. At the bottom you can see some of Microsoftās initiatives to reduce the percentage of users of this browser: educate users, tell friends, and put a banner on your website.
In February of last year, Internet Explorer 6 had a usage rate of 21%, while this year the rate has dropped to 12%. Will Microsoft get that percentage to 1% within a year?
