Como sabréis, uno de mis propósitos para este año era el de empezar a ver The Office, una genial serie de humor protagonizada por Steve Carrel que lleva ya ni mås ni menos que 7 temporadas en antena. Una serie tan rematadamente buena que no sólo la comencé a ver, sino que la terminé en poco menos de un mes (si empiezas a verla, no tengas en cuenta la primera temporada, que no hace honor al resto de la serie).
Saying that the series stars Steve Carrel is a mere formality, because all the characters have tremendous charisma and the lack of any of them would be noticeable. In the case of Carrel, his character Michael Scott, the stupid but good-hearted boss of the office, is practically essential. Carrel, who had a contract for 7 seasons, has decided not to renew for an eighth. In the actorâs words:
âI just thought itâs time, I want to fulfill my contract. When I first signed on I had a contract for seven seasons, and this coming year is my seventh. I just thought it was time for my character to go.â
âThe show is great, and the ensemble is so strong, and the writers are great, so itâs just one part of that ensemble drifting off,â he said. âTheyâve incorporated so many new characters and so many new, great storylines that I have no doubt itâll continue as strong if not stronger than ever.â
I donât know what future the series will have without him, but I think that with the entire roster of characters available it wouldnât be very difficult to find a replacement with charisma. What would be a little âcreepyâ would be if they put someone as bizarre as him as their boss, precisely because he stood out among the rest of the Dunder Mifflin managers for his eccentricities, which surprisingly turned his branch into the most productive in the company. The scriptwriters may precisely take advantage of that in an episode to do job interviews for managers of the same suit to maintain that productivity. Who knows, it could be a departure, or it could also be that Rick Gervaisâ cameo was a premonition of what is to come.
Despite everything, I donât know about you, but I donât believe at all that The Office has âjumped the shark.â
