I started bocabit.com 10 years ago, almost by chance and without any clear objective other than to write about what I wanted and have four cats read me. Based on silly posts and other more elaborate ones, the blog grew and even changed domain several times when an Asturian newspaper contacted me to collaborate with them.
At that time, blogs were beginning to be fashionable and little by little we were realizing that everything could be monetized based on sponsored posts, links and, above all, Adsense. That there were companies that were interested in providing visibility to their products and let you try them… For free! It was exciting not knowing what was going to be next, looking at the visits every so often, refreshing the page and seeing that there was a new comment… Until Google arrived.
When Google began to tinker with its search algorithms, it brought many of us down to earth. Suddenly. Then social media became fashionable and finished us off. They became the nerve center of the conversation and gave the final blow to the already scarce comments.
This blog, after so many years, was becoming a mammoth dinosaur, dependent on many plugins, with a huge database, many comments, good, ugly and regular content. The feeling of not being in control turned it into a burden that was difficult to write about rather than a source of pride.
So I decided to kill the dinosaur and start from scratch. Well, actually it’s still available, although to save myself headaches I’ve turned it into static content, I’ve dissected it.
And for what? – You will wonder.
I want simplicity, to reduce the blog to a minimum. May it once again become the hobby it once was and feel like mine again, away from the noise of social networks. I refuse to write tirades on Facebook that sooner rather than later will be forgotten or tweets lacking content to express my opinions. No, a blog allows you to do all that much better.
I can’t promise that I will write very frequently, nor that I will write about interesting topics, but at least I will try. We’ll see how things end, or rather, how they begin.
